The Clean Yards By-law enables the municipality to manage refuse, debris, and other health or safety hazards, regulate the storage of used vehicles, and address public nuisances. Its purpose is to protect residents, safeguard property, and ensure the municipality remains a clean and welcoming place for everyone.
Property owners and occupants in The Nation Municipality are responsible for keeping their land safe, clean, and well-maintained.
Property owners and occupants must:
- Keep yards free of garbage, debris, domestic or industrial waste, and anything that could create a health, fire, or accident hazard.
- Prevent infestations of rodents, insects, or vermin.
- Cut grass and weeds over 20 cm (8 in) and trim other vegetation to maintain visibility, safety, and access.
- Fill holes or excavations that could cause injury
- Maintain pools, hot tubs, wading pools, or artificial ponds in good repair and safe working order.
- Avoid creating unsafe conditions such as unprotected pits or wells.
- Never dump waste on municipal or public property.
- Compost only in approved containers or piles, kept covered to prevent pests and odors.
- Keep properties free of derelict, inoperative, unlicensed, or dismantled vehicles and parts, Exceptions apply for businesses, hobby vehicles kept in fully enclosed buildings, or recreation vehicles stored in compliance with zoning rules.

Enforcement & Penalties
Municipal By-Law Enforcement Officers or authorized staff have the right to inspect properties and surrounding areas to ensure compliance with the Clean Yard By-law. It is an offence to hinder or obstruct officers while they are performing their duties.
The Municipality may recover its costs of remedying a violation of this By-law by owner/occupier, by instituting court proceedings or by adding the cost, including interest, to the tax roll.
