A building permit is required for decks that are adjacent to or attached to a house when the walking surface is more than 600 mm (24 inches) above the adjacent grade. A permit is also required for any elevated deck that provides the principal access to a building.

Application Fees
Building permit fees are established in accordance with the Building Permit Fees By-Law. Refer to the Fees and Charges page for applicable fees.
All applicable fees are payable upon approval of the permit by the Building and Construction Department and must be received prior to the commencement of any work. A permit is not valid until full payment has been received by the Municipality.
Submit an Application
An application must include the following documents and details:
- Site plan showing the location of the proposed structure in relation to property lines and existing structures on the property.
- Foundation plan showing footing size and location, structural components including beams and floor joists (size, span, and direction), and overall dimensions of the proposed structure.
- Elevation drawings showing the general appearance of the deck.
- Cross-section drawings detailing footing depth and construction, height of the deck walking surface above grade, height of guards above the walking surface, step details, deck construction, guard construction, and structural support details, including the connection between the deck and the house.
- Authorization letter from the property owner (if not the applicant).
