The Nation Municipality’s Fireworks By-law regulates the discharge of fireworks, flying lanterns and pyrotechnic special effect fireworks within the municipality.
Before you Set Off Fireworks
- Fireworks are not permitted when a municipal burn ban is in effect. Always check for current fire restrictions or advisories before lighting any fireworks.
- Notices of Fire Bans will be posted on our Outdoor Fire and Fire Bans page.
Consumer Fireworks
Consumer fireworks are low-hazard outdoor fireworks that are meant for recreational use.
These types of fireworks may only be discharged between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on the following days:
- Victoria Day, and the day before and after
- St-Jean Baptiste Day, and the day before and after
- Canada Day, and the day before and after
- New Year’s Eve, and the day before and after
Residents may apply for an exemption to discharge fireworks outside permitted dates.
Fireworks are prohibited under the following conditions:
- In residential areas such as neighbourhoods, subdivisions, and mobile home parks
- During a Fire Ban or Partial Fire Ban
- Within 30 metres of nearby homes or buildings
- On roads, public property, or in public spaces
It is prohibited to aim or discharge fireworks toward buildings, vehicles, streets, or doorways.
Fireworks must be handled by adults (18+) or under close adult supervision.
Professional Fireworks
These types of fireworks are large-scale or professional-grade and require strict safety measures. They cannot be set off without first obtaining a Fireworks Display Permit from The Nation Municipality.
Flying Lanterns, Firecrackers & Prohibited Fireworks
- The use, ignition, release, sale, or offering for sale of flying lanterns is strictly prohibited within The Nation Municipality.
- Firecrackers and any fireworks classified as “prohibited” are not allowed to be discharged anywhere in the municipality.

Enforcement & Penalties
Anyone who does not comply with this by-law commits an offence and may be subject to a fine under the Provincial Offences Act.
