From May 1 to September 30, The Nation Municipality enforces restrictions on the use of sprinklers and unattended hoses supplied by the municipal water system. These restrictions apply to activities such as watering lawns, gardens, flowers, hedges, and other vegetation, as well as filling swimming pools.
Permitted watering times:
- Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.
- Even-numbered addresses: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The use of sprinklers and hoses left unattended is prohibited for everyone on Sundays.
Hand watering with a hose or watering can is permitted at any time.
The Nation Municipality may implement additional measures to further restrict outdoor water use. These measures may include reducing the permitted watering hours or, if necessary, imposing a complete ban on all outdoor water use. Any new water use restrictions and their effective date will be shared with residents through the municipal website, social media, and the alert system.

Enforcement & Penalties
Anyone who does not comply with this by-law commits an offence and may be subject to a fine under the Provincial Offences Act.
Exemptions, Permits and Licences
Due to current groundwater conditions and lower-than-normal well levels, the Municipality will not be issuing watering exemption permits at this time. These restrictions are necessary to protect the integrity, reliability, and sustainability of the municipal drinking water system and to ensure adequate water supply for essential use and fire protection.
Exemption permits may be issued under the sole discretion of the Operating Authority for the following conditions:
- New lawns or seeded areas: A permit may be issued to allow new lawns or seeded areas to be watered with a sprinkler or similar device from 7 PM – 10 PM for seven consecutive days starting on the date shown on the permit.
- New trees or shrubs: A permit may be issued to allow new trees and shrubs to be watered with a hand-held hose only. 7 PM – 10 PM for seven consecutive days starting on the date shown on the permit.
- Hardship cases: If following the standard watering schedule would cause serious damage or difficulty, the municipality may issue a permit allowing watering 7 PM – 10 PM for up to seven consecutive days.
The permit must be displayed clearly on the property. Only one permit per property per year is allowed.
