General Labourer - Sidewalk Snow Removal and Maintenance

Summary

Under the direction of the Lean Hand the incumbent is responsible for operating a sidewalk tractor as part of the Municipality’s snow removal operations, including the application of abrasives to control ice on sidewalks. The incumbent also performs various related snow removal duties as required by the department.

Main Responsibilities

• Remove snow from sidewalks using a sidewalk tractor within the assigned area;
• Manually remove snow from sidewalks and areas that are difficult to access;
• Clear emergency exits, garage doors, fire station access points, and fire hydrants, as required, within the assigned area;
• Apply abrasives (salt) as required to prevent and control ice formation;
• Conduct a visual inspection of the equipment before each use and ensure that it is in proper working condition;
• Promptly report any defects, damage, malfunctions, or other issues involving the tractor or equipment being used;
• Respond to calls from Lead Hand and be able to report to the workplace within a maximum of 30 minutes following the call;
• Maintain a good knowledge of the assigned area, including sidewalks, access points, priority areas, and locations requiring special attention;
• Operate heavy equipment, such as a loader, on occasion, as required by the department and provided the appropriate qualifications are held;
• Keep the equipment and work area clean and in good condition after use;
• Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure safe and efficient snow removal operations;
• Perform other related duties of a similar nature or level of responsibility, as assigned by the Lead Hand.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent

Experience

• Minimum 6 months, but less than 1 year 

Certification /Accreditation

• N/A

Abilities

• Good oral communication skills in both French and English;
• Previous experience operating a snow removal tractor is considered an asset;
• Previous experience operating a loader is considered an asset.
• Basic mechanical knowledge is considered an asset;
• Hold a valid Class G driver’s license;
• Demonstrate sound judgment and good decision-making skills;
• Possess strong interpersonal, customer service, and problem-solving skills;
• Remain attentive to pedestrians, vehicles, and other road users during snow removal operations;
• Demonstrate punctuality, reliability, patience, honesty, versatility, a strong sense of responsibility, and resourcefulness;
• Be able to work a variable schedule, particularly based on weather conditions;
• Be available to respond to call ins within the required time frame.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements

•  Be physically fit and able to perform manual tasks, including shoveling and loading salt into the spreader.

Work Environment

• Be able to work in challenging weather conditions, including cold temperatures, rain, snowstorms, freezing rain, and icy conditions;
• Be available on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from mid-November to mid-April, depending on weather conditions and operational requirements. Must be available to workdays, evenings, nights, and weekends, as required by the department.
