Heavy Equipment Operator, Truck Driver and Labourer

Summary

Under the supervision of the Public Works Lead Hand, the incumbent will be responsible for operating a truck with a DZ class license to perform snow removal, ice control, and the transportation of excess snow throughout the municipality. They will also be required to carry out various manual tasks related to maintenance.

Main Responsibilities

The heavy equipment operator is responsible for operating and maneuvering a variety of machinery, including but not limited to: a snowplow, tractor, and dump truck, to carry out various tasks. While experience with all of this equipment is not required, a diverse background in operating is considered an asset.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Clearing, salting and sanding municipal roads and parking lots to manage snow and ice;
• Remove snow from sidewalks in the villages areas.
• Transporting excess snow from the villages;
• The driver is responsible for the weight limits of his truck;
• Perform daily inspections and maintenance logs for the truck.
• Inform the Lead Hand or person in charge, of the presence of fallen trees, branches, potholes or any other anomaly likely to affect the visibility and safety of road users - in the event of immediate maintenance needs, advise his/her immediate superior;
• Perform any other related tasks.
• Carrying out general labour tasks for municipal infrastructure, particularly during project work, such as:
  • Maintenance of garage;
  • Any other related tasks.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education

• High school diploma or other related training

Experience

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a DZ class truck driver

Certification /Accreditation

• Valid Class DZ driver’s licence

Abilities

• Verbal communication skills in both languages;
• WHMIS and fire extinguisher courses;
• Experience as a snowplow and sander truck driver is an asset;
• Have strong concentration skills;
• Excellent manual dexterity and good reflexes;
• Be autonomous and resourceful;
• Have good vision;
• Be able to work as part of a team with other trades or work independently;
• Be attentive to the vehicle;

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements

• Good physical endurance to work long hours on heavy equipment;
• Good physical condition (sometimes lifting up to 20kg);

Work Schedule

• Friday to Sunday
• On-call work required, including evenings, nights, and weekends (minimum number of hours guaranteed)
• Required to carry a mobile phone at all times during winter operations must be able to report to the municipal site within 45 minutes when called
