Summary
Under the direction of the Lead Hand, the incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance of municipal infrastructure throughout both summer and winter seasons. This includes bridge maintenance, road construction, building maintenance, signage, and ensuring the safety of road users, particularly through snow clearing operations.
The role involves operating and maneuvering various types of heavy equipment, such as graders, backhoes, tractors, snow blowers, wheel loaders, salt spreaders, and snowplows (with or without attachments).
Main Responsibilities
General Labour and Operational Duties
- Rough grading and maintenance of pathways
- Resurfacing road shoulders
- Installation and maintenance of traffic signs
- Maintenance of parks and landfill sites
- Replacing and installing culverts
- Taking road elevations and excavating ditches
- Excavating and backfilling trenches
- Loading and unloading trucks using heavy equipment
- Transporting materials such as gravel and rock
- Grading and leveling roads
- Installing stormwater system piping
- Installing 9-1-1 civic address signs
- Collecting roadside litter
- Cutting roadside grass twice per year
Winter Operations
- Operating salt and snowplow trucks, including determining appropriate application rates and locations for salt and/or sand
- Clearing snow from roads, sidewalks, ditches, and municipal areas
- Transporting excess snow from villages
- Removing beaver dams and performing related drainage work
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operating heavy equipment including, but not limited to: excavators, graders, backhoes, tractors, snowplows, and dump trucks
- Performing daily inspections and maintaining equipment logs
- Conducting routine maintenance (oil changes, greasing, filter replacement, cleaning, light repairs, etc.)
- Ensuring compliance with vehicle weight limits
- Maintenance of municipal garages
Monitoring and Reporting
- Reporting hazards such as fallen trees, debris, potholes, or other safety concerns
- Documenting instances where residents place snow on municipal rights-of-way
- Patrolling municipal sectors as assigned
- Providing written reports to the supervisor or foreperson
- Performing any other related duties as assigned
Qualifications and Requirements
Education
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent
Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a DZ class truck driver
Certification /Accreditation
- Valid Class DZ driver’s licence
- First Aid and CPR/AED certification
- WHMIS certification
- Fire extinguisher training
- Chainsaw certification (asset)
Abilities
- Verbal communication skills in French and English
- Experience operating heavy equipment (excavator experience is an asset)
- Knowledge of welding and/or mechanical repair is an asset
- Experience with snowplow and sand pit operations is an asset
- Strong attention and concentration
- Good manual dexterity and reflexes
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Resourceful and reliable
- Good vision and spatial awareness
Working Conditions
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work long hours operating heavy equipment
- Good physical condition, including the ability to lift up to 20 kg
Work Environment
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions
Work Schedule
- Variable and irregular hours depending on weather conditions
- On-call work required, including evenings, nights, and weekends
- Winter operations may require 24/7 availability
- Required to carry a mobile phone at all times during winter operations must be able to report to the municipal site within 40 minutes when called

- Pay Rate: $35.03/hour
